Novena to the Seraphic Patriarch St. Francis

First Day

O fortunate St. Francis, who, in still youthful years, didst impose severe silence on all the voices of the passions, and extend thy hand to the poor, how soon did the sweet and omnipotent voice of God descend to thy heart, prompting thee to the hardships, blessed the miseries, for which thou didst exchange comforts and rich possessions!

But what will become of us, so tightly bound to the things of this world? Of us, slaves to the world and to the passions, who, ever following the passions, close our eyes so as not to see the dangers which threaten us? Let that Voice of the Most High which made thee an entirely new man, by thy intercession reach the depths of our heart. With kind violence tear us from the world and its deceits, turn all our affections from the ways of perdition to God, and our desires to heaven! Yes, to Heaven! Replace us in the narrow path of salvation. Weak and earthly, we shall never overcome the world, the flesh and the devil unless the power to combat them comes to us from God, and with it grace to persevere. Protect us, O great Saint, obtain for us whatever is necessary to imitate thee.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be

V. Pray for us, O holy Father Francis
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ

Let us pray

O God, Who, by the merits of blessed Francis, doest increase Thy Church by a new progeny, grant us, by imitating him to despise earthly things, and ever to rejoice in the participation of heavenly gifts. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Second Day

O St. Francis! From youth thou didst renounce the world; few and slight surely were thy errors. Yet in thine own eyes a great sinner, thou didst torment thy life by every rigor, and didst even die on ashes strewn on the ground.  And what penance have we done? If by mortification, prayer, alms, we do not wash away our sins in the blood of Christ, what will become of us? O Francis, martyr of penance, hasten to our assistance, obtain for us God’s grace to do penance as is necessary for our salvation. Aud us, O great penitent, pray for us.

Amen.

Third Day

O Seraphic Patriarch of the humble, who, on account of thy great humility, wast rich in gifts of grace, and art now in gifts of glory; who, voluntarily poor in all things, didst enrich the world with teachings and examples of a truly divine humility, aid us to rule our pride, to check the ill-born swelling wishes which perpetually war on our souls, and are the poisonous sources of mortal sin for us. By thy most powerful intercession, St. Francis, make us humble, mild, and meek—make us saints.

Amen.

Fourth Day

O sacred fire of God’s love, which didst so inflame the heart of Blessed Francis, descend, inflame, fill up, satiate our souls. Without charity we are lost: charity suffers to save us. O Francis, martyr of charity, protect us by thy intercession, obtain for us to love God, to love Him as He loved us, as He loves us still in spit of our ingratitude, because we are the work of His hands. Implant and fructify in us the salutary habit of acknowledging and adoring His providence in everything that befalls us, be it prosperity or adversity—that is, a filial confidence in His mercy.

Amen.

Fifth Day

From divine grace, by thy means, we devoutly implore, O St. Francis, the gift of patience in our external evils or internal tribulations, and resignation to the crosses which it pleases the Almighty to send us, and which certainly come for the greater good of our souls. Wretched we, that sometimes ask, and then cannot bear them. Our impatiences are occasions of sin: thy patience exalted thee to an eminent sanctity. Obtain for us from God, who suffered so much for us, from that God whom thou didst so imitate, that we may begin to suffer in peace for his love, in satisfaction for our sins.

Amen.

Sixth Day

Our holy protector, perfectly Catholic and Apostolic man, who didst here below so distinguish thyself, with valor maintaining intact the faith of the Roman Church and the veneration due the holy ministry, and who didst conduct and comfort the three Orders instituted by thee, by hope, by works, and by mellifluous teachings in the way of truth, thus to provide for the wants of Christianity, and still more to magnify the glory of God, obtain for us grace to profit by thy teachings, and by the instructions of the priest, to disengage ourselves from earth and rise to heaven, to profess Christian virtues, edify our neighbor by word and example, so as to dwell at last in heaven, where thou now enjoyest everlasting glory.

Amen.

Seventh Day

Our Lord Jesus Christ, Who, when the ardor of holy piety had decreased in the world, didst, in order to rekindle in our hearts the fire of Thy love, renew the sacred imprint of Thy Passion in the flesh of our glorious Francis, be propitious to us with grace, that by his merits and prayers we may constantly and cheerfully bear the cross, and by our works produce worthy fruits of penance. Hear us, O Jesus!

Amen.

Eighth Day

Holy Patriarch! Who can duly praise thy life or envy thy death? Let not the example of the one, or our reverent admiration of the other, be fruitless. Thou art in heaven; thy arrival was proclaimed by miracles. Enjoy, O great Father the eternal glory which awaits thee, but mercifully remember us. Aid sus to put thy teachings into practice; assist us in life; defend us in our last moment against the angel of darkness.  We humbly invoke thy patronage, while we celebrate thy glory.

Amen.

Ninth Day

Almighty, everlasting God! We wretched sinners, yet children of Thine, hope that Francis invoked by us will pray Thee in our behalf.  He lived like us in the vale of this life, but not in sins like us. Through his merits we implore Thy mercy.  And yet as it pleased Thee, O merciful God, that by the sacred stigmas he should become like unto our Redeemer Jesus Christ, permit him to intercede with Jesus and beg for us those graces most suited to our spiritual and temporal wants. This we implore in the name of Thy Son, who, with Thee and the Holy Ghost, lives and reigns for all eternity. Amen.

Amen.
